ARAG and Maxima combine to support small legal practices

By Legal Futures Associate ARAG

In 2021, DAS UK and Maxima—a provider of litigation funding and risk solutions—launched Optimise, a clinical negligence and personal injury scheme specifically designed for smaller legal practices. This scheme has played a crucial role in supporting sole practitioners and small firms through a fully delegated authority model.

In 2025, ARAG re-launched the scheme, bringing their extensive knowledge and experience to enhance the offering. ARAG introduced a new range of products and services, further expanding the scheme’s value.

Benefits of the optimise scheme

  • Competitive fixed rates

Optimise offers cost-effective, competitive fixed rates tailored for smaller firms.

  • Streamlined processing

A user-friendly online portal reduces administrative burdens and streamlines case management.

  • Portal access

Simplified case submission through the portal increases efficiency.

  • Dedicated relationship manager

Each firm is supported by a dedicated relationship manager to address their specific needs.

  • Delegated authority

Firms ineligible for direct schemes with A-rated insurers gain access through delegated authority.

  • Competitive premiums

The scheme provides competitive premiums for preferred risks.

Optimise covers a broad range of personal injury cases, including specialist areas such as sexual abuse, asbestos-related diseases, and animal act claims. It also includes an extensive selection of clinical negligence cases, such as dental negligence.

Positive feedback

Vanessa Andrews, Head of ATE Operations at Maxima, stated:
“We are delighted with the uptake of the Optimise scheme by regional specialist firms, many of whom previously lacked access to such schemes or were not receiving the full benefits of delegated authority. We have received very encouraging feedback from our solicitors.”

Alicia Sharman and Natasha Harrison of Timms Solicitors commented:
“We have found Optimise helpful and the scheme easy to use. It helps reduce several hours of administration per case and offers a wide range of claim cover.”

Enhancements to the scheme

Since its launch, the Optimise scheme has continued to evolve. It now features a single fixed premium—replacing variable premiums based on claim type—alongside a disbursement funding facility. These enhancements further streamline the process, making the scheme even more appealing to smaller firms.

The future of the Optimise scheme looks promising. Continued support and ongoing enhancements are set to further benefit smaller legal practices as the scheme evolves.
